Models for the Relativistic Electron Population and Nonthermal Emission in Clusters of Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
Models for the integrated relativistic electron population in clusters of galaxies are presented. The results depend on the history of electron acceleration in the cluster. If there is no present particle acceleration or other sources, then no high energy electrons (γ >∼ 300, E >∼ 150 MeV) should be present due to inverse Compton (IC) losses. High energy electrons are present if particle acceleration is occurring at present, perhaps as a result of a cluster merger shock. The resulting IC, synchrotron, and gamma-ray emission from these models has been calculated. In the models, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and very soft X-ray emission are a nearly ubiquitous feature, because this emission comes from IC by electrons with the longest lifetimes in clusters. Diffuse UV and optical emission is also expected in most clusters, but at levels which will be difficult to observe. Hard X-ray tails and diffuse radio synchrotron emission are only expected in clusters with recent or current particle acceleration; for example, this acceleration might be due to intracluster merger shocks. Gamma-ray observations at energies of around 100 MeV should detect both the dominant population of relativistic electrons and the corresponding ions. The predicted fluxes are easily detectable with GLAST.

Nonthermal Bremsstrahlung and Hard X-ray Emission from Clusters of Galaxies
We have calculated nonthermal bremsstrahlung (NTB) models for the hard X-ray (HXR) tails recently observed by BeppoSAX in clusters of galaxies. In these models, the HXR emission is due to suprathermal electrons with energies of ∼10–200 keV. We consider models in which these transrelativistic suprathermal particles are the low energy end of a population of electrons which are being accelerated t...
متن کاملNonthermal Phenomena in Clusters of Galaxies
Recent observations of high energy (> 20 keV) X-ray emission in a few clusters extend and broaden our knowledge of physical phenomena in the intracluster space. This emission is likely to be nonthermal, probably resulting from Compton scattering of relativistic electrons by the cosmic microwave background radiation. Direct evidence for the presence of relativistic electrons in some ∼ 30 cluster...
متن کاملHigh Energy X-Ray Emission in Clusters of Galaxies
Observations with the RXTE and SAX satellites have recently led to the measurement of a second component in the spectra of several clusters of galaxies which are known to have regions of extended radio emission. This new component is quite likely nonthermal emission resulting from Compton scattering of relativistic electrons by the cosmic microwave background. The nonthermal X-ray and radio mea...
متن کاملIntegral Observations of Galaxy
Cluster of galaxies are the largest concentration of visible mass in the universe and therefore a fundamental topic of cosmology and astrophysics. Recent radio, EUV, and X-ray observations suggest that clusters contain large populations of diiuse non-thermal relativistic and/or superthermal particles. These particles may be produced by acceleration in cluster merger shocks, AGNs, and/or superno...
متن کاملNonthermal Radiation and Acceleration of Electrons in Clusters of Galaxies
Recent observations of excess radiation at extreme ultraviolet and hard X-ray energies straddling the well known thermal soft X-ray emission have provided new tools and puzzles for investigation of the acceleration of nonthermal particles in the intercluster medium of clusters of galaxies. It is shown that these radiations can be produced by the inverse Compton upscattering of the cosmic microw...
